Guide to Lab Grown Diamonds
What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, created by people rather than mined from the earth.
They share the same chemical, physical, and optical composition as natural diamonds, made entirely of carbon atoms arranged in a crystal lattice.
The only difference is their origin: one forms deep underground over billions of years, the other in a state-of-the-art laboratory that replicates those same natural conditions in a matter of weeks.
At LRK, we see both diamond selections as excellent choices. Each diamond whether grown or mined, carries its own story, beauty, and purpose.
Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds
At first glance, you wouldn’t be able to tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one.
What sets them apart comes down to formation, rarity, and long-term value.
-
Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years beneath the Earth’s surface. Their rarity gives them enduring value and strong resale potential.
-
Lab-grown diamonds are created in laboratories in a matter of weeks, offering a more attainable option.
Both sparkle brilliantly — but they tell different stories. It simply depends on which story feels more you.
How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?
Every lab-grown diamond begins with a small diamond seed, placed inside a chamber that mimics the conditions found deep within the Earth’s mantle.
There are two main ways this process happens:
High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)
Carbon is subjected to extremely high pressure (5–6 GPa) and temperatures of up to 1,600°C, allowing atoms to crystallise around the seed, forming a diamond in a matter of weeks.
Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD)
A carbon-rich gas is transformed into plasma, causing carbon atoms to settle on the diamond seed layer by layer. Over time, these atoms build into a solid crystal, a diamond that’s chemically identical to one mined from the earth.
The result? A diamond that’s pure, brilliant, and made with remarkable precision.
Why Choose a Lab-Grown Diamond
Lab-grown diamonds have transformed fine jewellery by combining innovation with ethics and accessibility.
Here’s why more people are falling in love with them:
-
Ethical & sustainable - No mining, no environmental disruption.
-
More attainable - Typically 20–40% less expensive than natural diamonds.
-
High quality - Grown under carefully controlled conditions for excellent clarity and colour.
-
Customisable - Perfect for those who want to design something personal and meaningful.
At LRK, we love how lab-grown diamonds make luxury more attainable - allowing you to invest in craftsmanship.

Can I choose a lab-grown diamond for my engagement ring?
Absolutely. Lab-grown diamonds are just as durable and beautiful as natural ones, making them ideal for lifelong wear.
Why do some people prefer natural diamonds?
